Discussion on Agriculture Development Strategy with parliamentarian agriculture sub-committee

A discussion program on Agriculture Development Strategy (ADS) was held by agriculture subcommittee of parliamentary committee on Agriculture and Water Resources at the secretariat of the committee, Singhadurbar on 15 October 2014.The thematic CA members and 15 experts of agriculture attended the discussion program. The platform provided experts an opportunity to meet, discuss and exchange their views on ADS with parliamentarian and provide the way forward. Dr. Krishna Paudel and Dr. Netra Timsina from ForestAction Nepal representing civil society organizations were among the group of experts and also speaker of the session. They mainly focused on the need for revision of vision, strategy and action plans of the strategy to make it more coherent and clear. In his presentation entitled Agriculture Development Strategy: Suggestion and Commentary, Dr. Krishna mainly stressed on capability of Nepal to be self-reliant on agriculture and even grossing by diversifying productions provided that the strategy enforces transformation in agriculture based on local ecological characteristics, food and nutritional security, agriculture based enterprise and timely reform of operational plan of sustainable agriculture. Similarly, Dr. Netra Timsina advocated envisioning ADS to benefit community and nation however, the current priorities of transformation on economic structure of a society based on agriculture to industries and services jeopardizes the whole essence of ADS. He also questioned upon the suitability of framework of the strategy based on total factor productivity in Nepalese context.
