Since 2000, ForestAction Nepal has practiced a relatively horizontal organisational structure and a participatory, consultative decision-making culture within the generic governance framework of Nepal’s NGOs (General members-general assembly-executive board-executive coordinator and rest of the staff). Despite the generic framework, ForestAction upholds its unique structure and process that ensures accountability, transparency, autonomy and flexibility to project teams. The organisation operates through two parallel systems. The first is the programme team, who leads project delivery and ensures the contribution of activities to broader societal goals. The second is the operations team, which manages the organisation’s operational and financial systems. Such structure has been fundamental in ensuring quality delivery of the project along with the management of managerial burdens of the organisation. ForestAction is housed with expertise on social sciences, policy analysis, management and environment governance and has always facilitated in empowering its staff and providing leadership roles to young generations.
The project leaders serve as key pillars of the organisational governance, and together with the Finance and Operations Head forms the Management team responsible for guiding programmes and institutional management. The Executive Committee in consultation with the Management Team nominates the Executive Coordinator (EC). The EC contributes 25% of his/her time to organisational management and coordination with the rest focused on specific projects. Alongside such structure, the organisation maintains strong operational and financial systems that upholds high standards of governance and institutional integrity, reflecting commitment to the deliberative and participatory process it promotes.
